Technical Issues, Browser, Text Size

Q: When I click on NEBIS Catalog English I get the message "Time out / No response, Server must be down". Does this mean that NEBIS isn't working?
A: Not necessarily, but check the System Status page to find out, if the system is working and you are still getting an error message, test your browser for known problems.

Q: Which browser should I use for searching in the NEBIS catatalog?
A: We recommend that you use the most current versions of the prevalent browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape, Safari, Opera, etc.). Important: Javascript (Active Scripting in Internet Explorer)) must be enabled (test).

Q: Although I have the software version required I still have problems. What can I do?
A:Probably it has to do with your browser configuration or your Internet connection such as firewall, proxy server, filtersoftware WebWasher, turned off JavaScript or Style Sheets etc.
We do have a problem checklist which might help you even with tricky problems.

Q: Can I use the EndNote software to access the catalog?
A: Yes, in addition to Web-OPAC, Z39.50 compatible clients such as EndNote may access the catalog. Please download and install the required configuration file.

Q: Why is the text so small on the NEBIS screens? I can't to read it.
A: The text configuration is browser and platform dependent. You may change the text size in Netscape under Preferences or in Internet Explorer under Text Size.

Q: Is it possible to link directly to individual documents in NEBIS?
A: Yes. Detailed information can be found in the documentation NEBIS Link-to-Syntax.

If you have any other or browser-related questions, please send an e-mail to webmaster@nebis.ch.

Catalog Search

Q: How do I find a document in the NEBIS catalog?
A:
The main functions are explained briefly on the first page. Select a search mode (word search or browse an index). Each screen gives specific instructions. You can always find further help under Guided Search or Help in the menu bar at the top of the page

Q: How can I find the article entitled "Nanotech - Intelligent self-assembly" by D. Rotman in "Technology Review" Mar-Apr. 2000, 103(2):30?
A: Individual articles contained within other works are not recorded in the NEBIS catalog. Select Browse >Title beginning with..., enter "Technology Review" and press "Enter". In the selected catalog record, click on holdings and you will be able to order volume 103 number 2.
If you do not know where a specific article was published, search for the article title in a database at the ETH-Bibliothek. The Library staff at your home library or the staff at ETH-Bibliothek will be happy to help.

Q: What is the publication year coverage of NEBIS like?
A:
It varies from library to library, because electronic cataloging began at different times. You can find detailed information on the homepages of the NEBIS libraries.

If you have any other questions about searching the library catalog, please send an e-mail to your home library or info@library.ethz.ch.

User Registration, Ordering, Reservations

Q: How can I register for NEBIS?
A: You can register online. Select a home library (the library that you are probably going to use and collect books from most often). Your registration will then be checked and approved by your home library.

Q: I already have a library card from another library that uses the same library system. Is this card also valid for NEBIS?
A: If the library also belongs to the IDS-Verbund, you can use your library card with us. You do not have to register first. You can access NEBIS with your normal login and order the documents you require.

Q: I have forgotten my password. What should I do?
A: Please send your name and user ID, complete address incl. telephone number and date of birth to your home library or to service@library.ethz.ch. You will then receive a temporary password, which you should change as soon as possible within your NEBIS user account (www.nebis.ch).

Q: When I try to order a document I recieve the following warning "Your library user card has expired. Please contact your home library". What should I do?
A: The validity of NEBIS library user cards is limited. After the expiry date has been reached, documents can no longer be ordered and all borrowed documents are automatically recalled. Please contact your library to request an extension of your card validity and to organise the renewal of the relevant loan transactions.

Q: How long are books kept aside once they are ready for collection at the Circulation Desk?
A: You have seven - ZB (Zurich) and ZHDK-MIZ (Zurich) ten - days in which to collect documents put aside for you.

Q: By mistake I ordered a book to be mailed to my address, but I would like to pick it up in the library. Can I change my order?
A: Yes, if the book is not yet in the mail. Please send a message to the holding library. We will take care of the rest.

Q: How do I cancel an order made in error?
A: You can cancel reservations for documents which are currently on loan yourself in your user account: www.nebis.ch > User Account > Hold requests > Details > click the "Delete" button (depending on the session, you may also see the link "&f_bor_delete" - unfortunately we have not yet found a solution to the problem, but it works correctly).
Orders for items which are not on loan can only be cancelled once they are ready for collection - please contact the library which you selected for collection directly: http://www.nebis.ch/bibliotheken_e.html.

Q: How do I cancel an order for a copy made in error?
A: Orders for copies cannot be cancelled, as they are printed out and processed shortly after the order is placed. Should multiple copy orders be placed within approximately 20 minutes, it is generally assumed that this is an error and only one order is processed.

Q: How long may I keep the loaned documents?
A: When ordering, please pay attention to the information about the loan period in the NEBIS catalogue. You will also find the same information on each delivery note. Thus, for example, the information "A 28/140 days" means that the maximum loan period lasts 168 days: 28 days loan period, 2x28 days automatic renewal and 3x28 days manual renewal.
To profit from the maximum loan period please wait for the two automatic renewals before renewing your documents yourself after 28 days via the NEBIS user account.
A renewal can be granted only if no reservation has been made. Please check your NEBIS user account regularly. It shows the specified return date. Even in the case of a reservation by other users, this date will not change. In view of this, you will not receive any recall until the loan period shown in the user account has expired.

Q: Can I renew the loan period for loaned documents myself online?
A: Yes - When the first three months have expired, you have the possibility of renewing the loan period of the documents 3x online via the NEBIS user account, until the maximum loan period has been reached. Renewals can only be carried out if the documents have not been reserved by other users.
After the loan period has expired, you will get a reminder in which you are asked to renew your documents online. Therefore, we recommend you to wait for the reminder before renewing your documents. This is the only way to profit from the maximum loan period.
Please note that the loan periods might vary depending on the type of document or the library. Please contact the lending library directly for details and/or clarification concerning circulation/loan periods: NEBIS Libraries.

Q: What happens if I return a document too late?
A: You will be sent a recall notice at the end of the regular loand period. You must then return the document within 10 days. If you do not compy with this deadline, you will receive another reminder for which a fee is charged. The fine imposed per document will gradually increase in stages with each subsequent reminder, up to a maximum of CHF 35. Finally, we will start collection proceedings. Check the terms and conditions for your particular library.

Q: I have recieved a recall notice for a document which I only recently borrowed. Why?
A: The validity of NEBIS library user cards is limited. After the expiry date has been reached, all borrowed documents are automatically recalled and other documents can no longer be ordered. Please contact your library to request an extension of your card validity and to organise the renewal of the relevant loan transactions.

Q: Can I also be notified by e-mail?
A: Yes, if you entered your e-mail address when you registered.

Q: The e-mail sent by the library is not received. What is the problem?
A: There could be many causes. Perhaps you do not have enough space in your e-mail account and cannot receive e-mails from anyone. Perhaps your Internet Service Provider or your mail host is blocking our mails as they are being incorrectly interpreted as spam. Perhaps the configuration of your mail program or your spam filter is too strict.
Unfortunately we have no control over whether you receive your e-mails or not. The stipulated loan periods nevertheless appy in all cases. Likewise, fines for late returns as stated in the terms of use will also be payable.

Q: Why are charges listed as "not paid" in my NEBIS user account, even though I paid them a long time ago?
A: Charges for the previous three months are displayed in your user account. The accounting and clearing of fines are processed with another software. If you have further queries, please contact the NEBIS Fees Administration department gebuehren@library.ethz.ch. For charges levied by the Zentralbibliothek Zurich please contact the ZBZ directly.

If you have any other questions about registration, ordering and reservations, please send an e-mail to your home library or service@library.ethz.ch.
